Adaptation period

TThe pursuit of a regulated profession in the Republic of Croatia under the responsibility of a qualified expert that can be accompanied by further training and is subject to an assessment. A qualified expert is a qualified representative of a particular profession who has appropriate professional experience. Detailed rules governing the adaptation period and its assessment, as well as the status of an applicant under supervision, shall be laid down by the competent authority, taking into account that the applicant is a qualified expert in an European Economic Area (EEA) Contracting State.

Aptitude test

Test of the applicant’s professional knowledge conducted by competent authorities of the Republic of Croatia with the aim of assessing theapplicant’s ability to pursue a regulated profession.

Automatic recognition

Recognition of foreign professional qualifications, available solely to EU Member States nationals, by which the Republic of Croatia acknowledges that their evidence of formal qualification is equally valid as its own.

Competent authority

Any authority empowered to conduct procedures and determine the requirements for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications, provide information about the procedure and requirements for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications, and conduct other actions in accordance with the Act on Regulated Professions and Recognition of Foreign Professional Qualifications. Competent authorities are: competent professional organisations or other competent bodies or organisations empowered by special regulations to conduct the recognition procedure and determine the requirements for the recognition of professional qualifications, or ministries whose scope of activities includes particular regulated professions.

Evidence of formal qualification

Diplomas, certificates and other evidence issued by a competent authority in an EEA Contracting State that certify successful completion of formal education and, if necessary, professional education and training obtained in an EEA Contracting State. Evidence of formal qualification can also include diplomas, certificates and other evidence issued by a competent authority in a third country to the holder of such evidence who has three years of professional experience in an EEA Contracting State, which have been confirmed by that state and which grant their holder the right to pursue a particular profession within the borders of an EEA Contracting State in accordance with its current regulations.

Foreign Higher Education Qualification

Includes any level of education, diploma or other certificate issued by the competent authority which certifies a successful completion of a higher education program.

Professional and academic title and academic degree

Titles and degrees awarded in the Republic of Croatia after a successful completion of a higher education program.

Professional education and training

Any education and training which follows formal education and is explicitly focused on the pursuit of a particular regulated profession; such education and training includes one or more programs which are, where appropriate,  complemented by professional training, or rather probationary or professional practice.

Professional experience

The actual pursuit of a profession in an EEA Contracting State in accordance with applicable regulations.

Professional Qualification

Includes formal education and professional training (professional education and training which follows formal education, as well as potential professional experience acquired in the pursuit of a regulated profession in a European Economic Area (EEA) Contracting State), which enabled the applicant to pursue a particular regulated profession in an EEA Contracting State.

Professional title

A title that gives its holder the right to practice a particular regulated profession, and which can differ from the title acquired upon the completion of formal education in accordance with regulations on secondary and higher education in the Republic of Croatia.

Regulated Profession

A professional activity or group of professional activities, access to which, the pursuit of which, or one of the modes of pursuit of which is subject, directly or indirectly, by virtue of legislative, regulatory or administrative provisions to the possession of specific professional qualifications; or a professional activity or group of professional activities pursued by members of professional organisations with a professional title (List of regulated professions in the Republic of Croatia – in Croatian).

Self-employed person

A person who bears the risk of business success or failure by themselves, who works outside a subordinate relationship and who is paid for their services directly, personally and fully.

Third country national

Any person who is not a national of an EEPContracting State (which includes all EU Member States as well as Norway, Liechtenstein and Island).

Training

Includes formal education and, where appropriate, subsequent professional education and training.
